2012 MYAS/Gopher State/USSSA NEW Bat Standards
Many of you have heard about new bat standards for youth baseball.  There is a lot of confusion about BBCOR, etc...  There is an informative document available from the MN Youth Athletic Services website posted at http://www.myas.org/gm/sport.asp?NewsID=1653&SportID=3.  It provides guidelines for legal bats for 9 - 14 year-olds.

My interpretation is that if your aluminum bat is 2 1/4 diameter (skinny barrel), and has the old USSSA mark on it, it is legal.  Otherwise, the bat must either have the BBCOR certification or the new USSSA mark on it.  The problem with BBCOR is that they all have a -3 weight/length drop, so that makes a 30 - 32 inch bat pretty heavy for a 13 year old to swing.

The USSSA marked bats have a bigger weight/length drop, so a 32 inch bat with the USSSA mark might only weigh 23 Oz.  Hopefully, this information will help you to pick out a legal bat for your son if you are in the market.
